    The tags as well as the chains are made of stainless steel
    with a layer of black paint.
    Black tags are
    traditional stainless steel dog tags painted with a very high
    quality paint. The paint is applied in such a way that it will stay
    on during normal use. Occasionally, the black paint will chip.
    Chipping can even occur during the stamping process.
    However
    if you are very careful, avoiding to get the tags wet, specially
    with salt water, the paint will last very long.
    The “BLACK” dog tags have
    been made according to the regulation of the January 15, 1967 of
    the United States Army,
    Vietnam (USARV) which ordered to all of the Special Operation Groups operating behind enemy
    lines to blacken all insignia when in the field.
    This regulation is still in force up today
    and it is the  identification used by all of
    the Special
    Operations Groups (Green Berets,
    Army Rangers, Navy SEALs, commandos, etc) of the U.S. Army.
